Samsung Electronics joins driverless cars race

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd has officially joined the race to put driverless cars on the road with the unveiling of its first set of components for autonomous driving at an annual trade show in Las Vegas this week.

According to a Reuters report, the electronics giant also announced that it had partnered with a "leading European automaker", for which it planned to deliver 5G technology for cars.

In a deal that closed in March last year, Samsung bought Harman International for $8-billion, making it the biggest overseas acquisition ever by a South Korean company.

At the trade show, Samsung Electronics unveiled an automotive camera system with features including warning systems for collisions, lane-departure and adaptive cruise control.

A "digital cockpit" was also unveiled which allows drivers to personalize cars they don't even own. This system accesses users' profiles from their mobile devices and cloud.

The camera system, built on machine learning and augmented reality, is set to begin shipping sometime this year, but no exact date was given.

In September, the tech giant announced that a strategic business unit for autonomous and advanced driver assistance service had been established, along with a $300-million fund to invest in automotive start-ups and technology.
