Bayliss: England should be World Cup favourites

Bayliss: England should be World Cup favourites

England coach Trevor Bayliss feels that his team should start the 2019 World Cup in the United Kingdom as favourites.

Bayliss also feels that their series decider against New Zealand on Saturday will help their World Cup preparations with the match taking on the air of a final after a see-saw series which both teams have led.

Speaking ahead of the fifth ODI at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Bayliss said: “These one-off matches, where it counts, it will be a good test for our guys heading into that World Cup.

“The way we’ve been playing one-day cricket, and obviously playing at home, we should go into that tournament as one of the favourites. With that, it brings a little bit of extra pressure — having to win those one-off matches — so this is a good test.”

England's success has been built on the back of a powerful middle order but it was their failure in the fourth ODI that allowed the Black Caps a look in to level the series.

The tourists slipped from 267 for 1 to 335 for 9 in their contest in Dunedin, something Bayliss says the team have processed and discussed and will now look to put behind them.

The coach added: “We certainly had a chat about it after the game,” he said. “It is the first time one of our middle-order guys hasn’t come off.

“I think the important thing is that they learn from that. They’ve all got a little bit of a different way of going about it — so they need just to make sure they’re true to themselves and play the best way for them.”
